WORLD AGRICULTURAL FORUM CONGRESS 2011
Feeding 7 billion - how to feed the world
In 1798, the English economist and clergyman Thomas Malthus predicted that one day the population of the world would outstrip the globes ability to feed it. The 31st October 2011 was the day the UN estimated that the global population would reach 7 billion.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and others are alarmed that the world is running out of agricultural capacity to feed itself and to provide all the other necessary things the land provides. The talk is of improving food security. According to the UNs Department of Economic and Social Affairs, global population is predicted to rise to anywhere between 9 and 12 billion by 2050.
Jim Bolger, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the World Agricultural Forum says: If there is one thing which must not be compromised, it is the availability of food. Food shortages lead directly to a disrupted society, no matter where in the world. He continues while the concerns about food security are real, it does not mean we are necessarily facing catastrophe - far from it. The human race is hugely innovative and adaptive and with the right approach, can almost certainly make up any perceived shortfalls. But if history is any guide, it wont happen by doing things the same old way.
The 2011 Congress of the World Agricultural Forum (WAF) entitled Rethinking Agriculture to sustain a growing global population will address the new ways of feeding the growing global population. This Congress focused on rethinking what we do now in agriculture and food production aims to provoke the generation of ideas to solve real problems and not solutions to fit a particular political problem.
Constituted by the non-profit World Agricultural Forum, the Congresses have a record of bringing together speakers and delegates from all walks of life in a neutral environment. Global leaders from the business, political, diplomatic, NGO and academic worlds will be present to think and debate how things can be done differently to improve global food security. As always many delegates will have strong opinions. But being impartial, the Congress is open to all ideas and shades of opinion.
28th November - 1st December 2011, Renaissance Hotel, Brussels, Belgium.

COP17 / CMP7 UN CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE 2011
The United Nations Climate Change Conference will bring together representatives of the world's governments, international organizations and civil society. The discussions will seek to advance, in a balanced fashion, the implementation of the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol, as well as the Bali Action Plan, agreed at COP 13 in 2007, and the Cancun Agreements, reached at COP 16 last December.
This year the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 7th Session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the parties (CMP7) to the Kyoto Protocol, will be held in South Africa.
As with previous United Nations (UN) Climate Change conferences, participation at COP 17 and CMP 7 will be restricted to appropriately nominated representatives of Parties, observer States, accredited observer organizations and the accredited media. However, those Parties to the Convention that are not Parties to the Protocol may participate as observers in the meeting of the Parties.
Thousands of participants from government representatives to observer organizations take part in sessions. The COP 15 in Copenhagen in 2009 attracted over 24,000 delegates, including some 10,590 government officials, over 13,000 representatives of UN bodies and agencies, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, and 3,221 accredited media members. COP 16 / CMP 6 in Cancun last year had over 11,800 participants.

PESTICIDES IN WATER - is the current ideology
practical and sustainable?
This one day event will attempt to highlight the problems with the current ideology related to pesticides in water. Individual pesticides have unique properties, and many variable factors determine the specific risk in terms of water pollution and these include the half-life; mobility in soil and solubility in water: Many pesticides are fairly soluble in water so that they can be applied with water and be absorbed by the target. The higher the solubility of the pesticide, the higher the risk of leaching. Residual herbicides are generally of lower solubility to aid soil binding but their persistency in the soil can cause other problems.
The following issues will also be considered:
* Should the 0.1 ug/litre blanket (one size fits all) EU limit be challenged and replaced with a USEPA risk based approach with individual values for each approved pesticide? For products based upon metaldehyde and glyposate this could make orders of magnitude differences in permitted concentrations
* The issues of cost and carbon footprint of pesticide removal strategies from water
* Food security versus use of pesticides in relation to population predicted increase
* Screening of pesticides as used in routine food analysis versus targeted analysis for targeted routine water analysis?
* Technical innovations and future pesticide use and dealing with the challenge
Who should attend?
Water companies operational and laboratory staff
Pesticide manufacturers
Agricultural community
Environmental consultants
Regulators

BUSINESS UNUSUAL - MAKING IT HAPPEN
BITC National Environment Conference 2011
In every organisation there are those with the vision or technical skills to spot new opportunities that can take their business forward. This event aims to inspire and enable environment experts and business leaders to spot sustainable business opportunities and develop and translate them into successful business cases that will be more likely to secure board approval.
The transition to a low carbon economy offers the greatest opportunities ever known to construct thriving, sustainable businesses and organisations that bring value in the short and long term, but this will only be possible with vision, planning and action now.
However, groundbreaking research reveals that even the leading businesses will fail to exploit many of the environmentally sustainable options open to them, and that radical business transformation is unlikely before 2020, instead we will see a continuation of business as usual but in a slightly more efficient form in the next ten years.

BUILDING RESILIENCE: RESOURCE SECURITY AND THE ROLE OF THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Now that the seven billionth person arrived on the planet, it is clear that resource scarcity and security are fast rising up both economic and environmental agendas.
A more circular economy, that rewards the stewardship of valuable resources, could help protect the economy from future shocks and uncertainties, reduce the environmental impacts of supply chains - from primary resource extraction to end-of-life - and open up new business opportunities.
Global demand for resources could treble in the next forty years, but access to resources is becoming more difficult as energy costs rise, resource-exporting countries impose restrictions and climate change impacts bite.
Green Alliance, in association with the CBI, is hosting a high level conference to debate the risks and opportunities with government ministers Vince Cable MP and Caroline Spelman MP, and with EU environment commissioner Janez Potočnik.
Confirmed speakers include:
Vince Cable MP, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills
Janez Potočnik, European Environment Commissioner
Neil Bentley, Deputy Director-General, CBI
Caroline Spelman MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

ADBA NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2011
The Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association
The ADBA National Conference is a major UK conference for the anaerobic digestion and biogas industries. Hosted by The Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association (ADBA), this annual event attracts over 200 delegates from all sectors of the industry from waste, food, energy and water to national and local Government. The organisers claim it is the only event in the sector that allows its delegates to directly influence the development of the AD and biogas industries. They say this makes it the event that all key decision makers want to attend.
The conference will debate whether the AD industry is finally gathering momentum. Despite progress with the announcement of the RHI and the development of the AD Strategy and Action Plan, is the AD industry actually moving forwards at the rate required or are there still major obstacles preventing this vital growth? If the UK is to meet its climate change and renewable energy targets by 2050 then a mature AD industry is critical. A mature UK AD industry can deliver over 40TWh of renewable energy, equivalent to 20% of the UK’s domestic gas demand and a significant proportion of the UK’s renewable fertilisers.
High level debates led by expert panels will cover the following issues:
* Is the AD Momentum Building?
* Waste Collection, Gate Fees and the Impact of Eric Pickles
* Ofwat - OFT Market Study and impact on Water and AD industries
* The Role of Standards in the Development of the AD Industry
* Delivering a Strategy for Biomethane as a Transport Fuel
The ADBA National Conference also features a table-top exhibition and a host of networking opportunities.
